WHAT IS CAGRILINTIDE?

Cagrilintide is a long-acting amylin receptor agonist, structurally related to the endogenous hormone amylin (co-secreted with insulin by pancreatic β-cells) and to the earlier amylin analogue pramlintide. A fatty-acid albumin-binding modification — the same acylation strategy used in long-acting GLP-1 compounds — extends its activity far beyond native amylin’s few-minute half-life. In research settings, cagrilintide is studied for its role in appetite-regulation pathways and its combined effects when investigated alongside GLP-1 receptor agonists. Because its mechanism (amylin pathway) is distinct from — but complementary to — the GLP-1 receptor pathway studied with compounds such as SM1 and TZ2, cagrilintide is frequently examined in combination research protocols. It is important to note that a large proportion of the highest-profile published data (the REDEFINE programme) studies cagrilintide in fixed combination with a GLP-1 receptor agonist rather than in isolation.
